What counts as a private onsen?

There are two main types. A room with its own open-air bath (露天風呂付客室) gives you a hot-spring bath on your balcony or terrace for the whole stay. A private kashikiri or family bath (貸切風呂 / 家族風呂) is a bath one group uses at a time, booked in slots or used when free. Both let couples bathe together, which shared onsen don't allow, and both avoid the tattoo question in most cases. Our guide to the terms explains the differences.

How to choose an onsen town for a private bath

Start with time and travel. From Tokyo, Hakone, Atami and Kawaguchiko are the quickest; see onsen near Tokyo. From Kyoto and Osaka, Arima and Kinosaki are classics; see onsen near Kyoto. For a slower trip, small-inn towns such as Yufuin, Kurokawa and Ginzan are known for atmosphere.

Then think about the bath. If you want to soak whenever you like, look for in-room open-air baths. If budget matters, look for inns with several free private baths. If you have tattoos, start with our tattoo-friendly list. If you want Mt Fuji in the view, see Fuji-view ryokan.

How we verify private-bath facts

Every fact on this site comes from the property's own official website, linked to the page where we found it. If a website doesn't say, we mark it 'not confirmed' rather than guess. Rules and prices change, so confirm with the property before you travel; read more on how we verify.
