Arima: the closest classic onsen to Osaka

Arima is one of Japan's oldest hot-spring towns, with two famous waters: iron-rich 'gold' (kinsen) and clear 'silver' (ginsen). Direct buses from Osaka take about an hour, and trains run via Sanda or the Kobe Electric Railway. Its proximity means many upscale inns with in-room baths, as well as mid-range inns with private family baths.

Longer trips from Osaka

Kinosaki is about 2 hours 40 minutes on the Konotori limited express and rewards a night of bath-hopping. Gero is reached via Nagoya on the Hida limited express. Arashiyama combines well with sightseeing in Kyoto.

Tips for an onsen night from Osaka

Weekend private onsen from Osaka: what sells out

Friday and Saturday nights in Arima and Kinosaki fill well ahead, especially rooms with their own open-air bath, which are a small share of most inns' rooms. If your dates are fixed, book the room type first and look at activities later. If they are flexible, a Sunday-to-Thursday night is usually easier to get and often cheaper.
