Arima and Arashiyama from KIX

Arima is reached by train to Osaka or Kobe and then a bus or the Kobe Electric Railway. Arashiyama is reached by the Haruka limited express to Kyoto and the JR Sagano line.

First and last nights

Arima is a good first night if you want an onsen town atmosphere straight away; Arashiyama suits travellers heading into Kyoto anyway. For your last night, leave time for the return trip and luggage. See onsen near Osaka and onsen near Kyoto for more.

Where to go from Kansai Airport by trip length

With one night, Arima is the most practical: you can be in a private bath by late afternoon and back at the airport or in Osaka the next morning. With two nights or more, Kinosaki rewards the longer journey with its walkable town and many inns with private family baths.

If you are continuing to Kyoto, the hot-spring inns of Arashiyama and Ohara fit into a Kyoto stay without an extra trip. Inland towns such as Gero are possible but make more sense as part of a longer route through Nagoya and the Japan Alps.

Late-evening arrivals should book a room-only plan or an airport hotel for the first night; many ryokan finish serving dinner early in the evening.
