The water here is strongly acidic and comes out of the ground in huge volumes, which is why so many inns in Kusatsu can offer free-flowing baths. The town centre is compact, with the Yubatake lit up at night and the Netsunoyu hall where the traditional yumomi water-cooling show is performed.

Kusatsu has big hotels and many small family-run inns. Private family baths are common at the smaller properties, and they are a practical option for families with children.
