Onsen inside Kyoto city

Central Kyoto has no traditional onsen town, but Arashiyama, Ohara and Kurama have hot-spring ryokan. Arashiyama is about 15 minutes from Kyoto Station on the JR Sagano line, which makes it easy to combine sightseeing with a private soak. Ohara is a rural valley about an hour by bus, and Kurama is a mountain village on the Eizan railway. Kyoto charges an accommodation tax on top of the bathing tax, so factor it in.

Onsen towns worth the trip from Kyoto

Arima, behind Mt Rokko, is known for its rust-coloured 'gold' water. Kinosaki offers bath-hopping between seven public bathhouses and many inns with free private baths. Gero has smooth alkaline water and pairs well with a trip to Takayama.

Planning tips

For one night, Arashiyama or Arima keeps travel short. For a dedicated onsen trip, Kinosaki in winter crab season is a classic, so book early. Compare the Kinosaki free private bath list if budget matters, and remember that Arashiyama is very busy by day: staying overnight lets you see it early and late.

Day trip or overnight from Kyoto?

Arima and Kinosaki work very differently. Arima is close enough for an afternoon soak and dinner back in Kyoto, so it suits travellers who want a private bath without changing hotels. Kinosaki is closer to a full day each way, and the town is at its best in the evening, when guests stroll between the public baths in yukata. If you choose Kinosaki, plan an overnight stay and use your inn's private baths before dinner or early in the morning.

Inside Kyoto itself, the hot-spring ryokan of Arashiyama, Ohara and Kurama are the quickest option, but they are fewer and many sit at the upper end of the price range. For more choice at mid-range prices, look at Kinosaki and Gero.
