Best onsen towns near Tokyo for a private bath

Hakone is the classic choice, with a wide range of rooms with private open-air baths. Atami is a seaside resort under an hour by Shinkansen. Kawaguchiko is the place for Mt Fuji views. Nikko-Kinugawa pairs shrines with a river gorge, and the Izu towns of Ito and Shuzenji are calmer and often better value.

How to choose: travel time, style and budget

For the shortest trip, Atami and Hakone are hardest to beat. For views, choose Kawaguchiko or a Hakone property on high ground. For a traditional village feel, Shuzenji. For value, Ito and Izu often cost less than Hakone at weekends. Consider the last leg too: some inns are a bus or taxi ride from the station, and many offer pick-ups if you ask.

Think about what you want from the bath. A room with its own open-air bath is the most private option and the priciest; an inn with free private baths is the budget-friendly way to soak together. Couples should look at our Hakone couples list, and travellers with tattoos at the tattoo-friendly list.

Planning a one-night onsen trip from Tokyo

Check-in is usually mid-afternoon and dinner early evening, so aim to arrive by about 3 to 4 pm. Leave large luggage in a station locker or use a luggage delivery service if your inn is up a hill. Weekday nights are noticeably cheaper than Saturdays. Book private bath slots as soon as you check in, and plan an early-morning soak before breakfast, when baths are quietest.

If you can't stay overnight, a day-use private onsen in Hakone fits into a day trip.
