The area is not one town but a string of hot-spring districts. Yumoto and Tonosawa sit at the bottom of the valley near the railway, Miyanoshita and Gora climb the mountain on the Hakone Tozan line, and Sengokuhara and the Lake Ashi shore spread out across the old caldera. Water sources differ between districts, so a stay in Gora can feel quite different from one in Yumoto.

Because Hakone is so close to Tokyo, it has one of the densest concentrations of rooms with their own open-air bath anywhere in Japan, from compact modern inns to old-school ryokan. Many inns also keep one or more private family baths that couples can use without booking a premium room.
