Routes from Narita to onsen towns

The Narita Express runs to Tokyo Station (for the Shinkansen to Atami) and Shinjuku (for the Romancecar to Hakone). For Nikko-Kinugawa, take the Keisei line to Ueno, the Ginza line to Asakusa and a Tobu limited express.

Is an onsen first night realistic from Narita?

It can be, with a morning or early-afternoon arrival. If you land late, consider a night in Tokyo first. Atami's Shinkansen connection makes it the most forgiving choice after a long-haul flight, and Kinugawa suits travellers who plan to see Nikko's shrines the next day.

Narita arrival day: keep it simple

From Narita, almost every onsen trip passes through Tokyo, so on arrival day pick the town with the fewest changes. Nikko-Kinugawa works well if you can reach Asakusa or a JR connection in good time; Hakone and Atami involve crossing the city first.

Many ryokan serve dinner at a set time and may ask late arrivals to choose a room-only plan or to tell them in advance. If your flight lands in the afternoon, check the latest check-in and dinner times before booking, and consider a first night in Tokyo with the onsen on day two.
