Atami is a lively seaside resort under an hour from Tokyo by Shinkansen, with many sea-view rooms. Ito is relaxed and known for abundant hot water, with inns that often have private baths at gentler prices. Shuzenji is an inland village with a river, an old temple and a bamboo path, and some of Izu's most refined ryokan.
Getting around Izu
The Tokaido Shinkansen serves Atami and Mishima; the JR Ito line and Izu Kyuko line follow the east coast; the Izu-Hakone railway runs to Shuzenji. The Odoriko limited express connects Tokyo with Ito and Shuzenji. A rental car helps if you want to explore the coast and the quieter west side.
