What a Hakone rotenburo room includes

An open-air bath in the room is usually on a balcony, terrace or small garden, filled with hot-spring water or, at some properties, ordinary heated water. You can soak whenever you like for the whole stay, which is why these rooms are popular for special trips. Sizes vary from a compact tub for two to a large stone or cypress bath with a view of the valley.

Look at the water source. Some properties say their baths use free-flowing spring water (源泉掛け流し); others don't say, or note that water is heated or recirculated. Our property pages show what each website states.

All rooms or some rooms?

Most Hakone properties sell only a few rooms with an open-air bath, as a premium category. A smaller number say every room has one, which means any booking gets you a private bath. When a property only has some, choose the room type carefully on the booking site: the name usually mentions 露天風呂付 or 'with open-air bath'.

How to choose and book

Decide on the area first: Yumoto for convenience, Gora and Miyanoshita for mountain views, Sengokuhara and Lake Ashi for quiet. Then compare room types with the same plan (with or without dinner) across Agoda, Trip.com and Booking.com, including taxes and cancellation terms. Rooms with open-air baths sell out first at weekends.

If the price is too high, an inn with free private baths is the next best option; see our Hakone couples list and the full Hakone guide.
