Noboribetsu vs Jozankei

Noboribetsu sits beside Jigokudani, a steaming volcanic valley, with several kinds of spring water. Jozankei is Sapporo's own resort in a forested gorge, about an hour from the city, especially lovely in autumn.

Getting there

Noboribetsu is about an hour by bus from New Chitose Airport. Jozankei is about 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes by bus from Sapporo Station, and some hotels run shuttles.

Tips

Many properties are large resort hotels, so check that in-room baths use hot-spring water. Winter is cold and snowy, which makes an open-air bath memorable.

Hokkaido onsen by season

Winter brings deep snow and the classic image of an open-air bath surrounded by white, but also cold, early darkness and occasional transport disruption; allow extra time on buses. Summer is mild compared with Honshu and a popular time for road trips. Autumn colours arrive earlier than further south, often from late September in the mountains.

Distances in Hokkaido are large. Jozankei is the natural choice from Sapporo; Noboribetsu fits a route between New Chitose Airport and Hakodate or Lake Toya.
