Beppu vs Yufuin
Beppu is a seaside city with several onsen districts, steam rising from vents, the 'hells' and inns at every price, many with private family baths. Yufuin is a valley town below Mt Yufu with small, stylish ryokan, often detached cottages, where private baths are common.
Getting there
Beppu is about 2 hours from Hakata on the JR Sonic limited express; Yufuin about 2 hours 15 minutes on the Yufuin no Mori. Buses link the two in about an hour. Kurokawa in neighbouring Kumamoto makes a good addition.
Tips
Stay in Kannawa for Beppu's steamy atmosphere, or in Yufuin for a quiet cottage stay. Local public baths in Beppu are cheap and simple; bring a towel and soap.
